Can we win the Gas and Electricity price wars by switching suppliers?

By: Lewis Taylor

In short, yes but it is a difficult situation that faces us, with the price wars going on, who will win?

Our attitudes towards switching suppliers leaves us open to exploitation by the huge Energy companies who have our misguided loyalty. We aren't happy with the situation yet we do nothing.

The moment we hear anything to do with cheaper energy suppliers and switching our gas and electricity, we hear alarm bells ringing which drowns out the sound of the good information which might be coming to us. Are we too lazy to switch or just plain ignorant to the benefits?

Tomorrow we will probably hunt around before filling up the fuel tank in our cars just to save a couple of pounds, probably wasting that same amount in fuel and time looking for the cheaper option, or causing long term damage to our engines by running the fuel too low forcing debris through the engine yet the thought of switching suppliers - No chance!

The big suppliers who we give our loyalty to are simply making money from our laziness and ignorance. We think nothing of spending hours ringing around insurance companies or surfing the net for better deals for our mobile phones, we'll even consider switching bank accounts for a better deal or £100 cashback. With our ability to find the best deals why is it that we seem to always overlook one of the most simplest ways of saving money.

It's not the fault of the suppliers, if they have millions of customers, why should they drop their prices? The fact is that there are better deals out there and many of the lower priced suppliers have high levels of customer service too. We constantly moan about the price of our gas and electricity and yet we still refuse to budge.

We can recall the bad press when the market was deregulated. Teams of 'Field Sales Consultants' or door knockers were sent out to the masses to preach about the savings to be made by switching suppliers. Many of these sales guys upheld a level of moral obligation but the 'small percentage that spoil it for the rest of us' was at large. Of course people were told of such riches by switching suppliers that they could do quit work and go swimming with dolphins or take a private jet to their new holiday home on the French Riviera. I am exagerating but I'm sure you get the idea. This fueled many programmes and articles against switching suppliers and left a huge stigma with switching suppliers. These days, Energy companies are regulated and have certain sales proceedures to ensure that the consumer receives a good and fair deal.

Is this still in our minds? Or is it just an excuse to do nothing. The fact remains that millions of UK homes are wasting £millions every year on over priced energy bills and we seem to be happy to carry on trying to ignore the fact that Mr lower priced supplier can save us up to and over £330 per year. Imagine if our house or car insurance quotes came out that much cheaper, we'd bite their hands so fast that we could get arrested for a hand biting related incident (not sure if this is an actual crime in the UK but I wouldn't be surprised). Of course the crazy part of it is that many of these lower priced suppliers actually offer a better level of customer service than some of the more expensive suppliers according to figures found on many price comparison sites such as Money Angels.

So, can we win from the Gas and Electricity price wars? Of course we can, we just have to do something about it ourselves and stop waiting for a miraculous price decrease that may never happen. My advice is switch now and if another company offers a better deal, switch again and again, and again. We are only ever have to give our suppliers 28 days notice so take back control and be a more assertive consumer.
