Child Bullying: What Are The Warning Signs?

By: Florrie Poff

Of all the problems your child could experience, bullying is probably one of the most serious. This article helps you to identify some of the signs that may indicate your child is being bullied.

Bullying includes any behavior that threatens your child or causes distress, hurt or pain whether it is emotionally, physically or a combination of these. There are many reasons why a child may be the subject of bullying. A child may be bullied because they wear spectacles, or because of how they look, religion, race, signs of poverty, family break-up, being shy or even quiet. A child may be picked on when they stand out to be different from other children and so the bully feels this child can be easily targeted.

Bullying can destroy the confidence a child has thus leaving them feeling worthless, frightened, withdrawn and isolated. If bullying is not stopped quickly the consequences could impact on a child for many years ahead.

The conclusion of numerous surveys of groups of children recently is that more than 50% said they had been bullied at school. It would appear that despite the fact that most schools have in place an anti-bullying policy, bullying continues to be a major issue for children of all ages.

Being able to recognize the tell-tale signs that might indicate that your child is being bullied in school, or at a club or society that your child may attend is one of the most important things that parents need to learn and apply. Whilst these signs can be a useful indicator they do not necessarily point to bullying. However, the following are signs to look out for:

Money for food and drink taken.

Has low self-esteem when previously this appeared good.

Shows high levels of anxiety.

A change in the behavior of your child might be they have become moody, depressed, tearful, or possibly quiet and withdrawn.

Torn clothes visible after returning from school.

Visible signs of being anxious.

Takes a different walking route to school than previously.

Fewer friends than before, or no friends at all.

Poor sleeping pattern and having bad dreams.

A loss of appetite.

No desire to take the bus to school.

Interest in school work and school grades have fallen recently.

Walks to school using a differant route than used previously.

Has fewer friends than previously, or no real friends at all.

Interest in taking part in school activities has reduced.

Modern technology is wonderful and nowadays many children have a cell/mobile phone and Internet access. Children often share their phone and email details with their friends, but friendships can easily be broken and their personal information can be used against them to cause distress.

Therefore, has your child got a cell/mobile phone? If so, it could be your child is receiving insulting, threatening or vulgar text messages. Unpleasant messages may also be left by the bully on the answer phone. Do you really know if this is happening to your child?

The bully may also be sending your child threatening emails, or several children may be carrying out a very unpleasant campaign against your child through emails or unmonitored Internet chat rooms. Therefore, it is very important that parents monitor the use of these modern methods of communication and check how these are affecting your child.

Your child may be suffering as a result of being bullied but it may not be bullying either. It could be that your child is medically unwell. As a parent you are in the best position to find out what the problem really is.

Careful and thorough investigation is necessary and it is only when this has been done will you be able to confirm or otherwise whether or not your child is being bullied. Once you know this, you can then take whatever action is needed to remedy any bullying. Whatever you do, do not leave anything to chance. Keep your eyes and ears open and as soon as you suspect anything, take action quickly.
