Digital Photography

By: Joshua Beachan

Digital cameras are dropping in price and everyone wants one. As early as five years ago the prices were prohibitive for even a basic model. If you wanted more options, you'd pay even more. These days, even the upgraded models are affordable. Digital photography is so easy and great, that it's the only way to go!

Before buying one, check out what kind of capabilities you might want. Most people that want one have a computer at home, although it isn't a necessity. You can buy a printer that hooks right up to your camera for an affordable price. Just plug it in, push a button and your pictures will print out for your enjoyment. Before you start buying, make sure that all your hardware and software are compatible. The easiest way to go is to load your pictures from your camera to your PC. You can manipulate the pictures to how you want them to look, upload to a picture sharing website, and share them with family and friends. If anyone wants hard copies, they just need to print them.

Cameras are unique because of their various specifications. The first thing to consider is mega-pixels. This term refers to the number of pixels a camera can take when set at its highest resolution. You can buy a camera ranging from 2.0 mega-pixels, clear up to 12 mega-pixels. Most average consumers wouldn't need to waste money on models featuring more than 4.0 mega-pixels. The higher resolutions are for professional photographers or someone who wanted to blow their pictures up to an extra large size. A camera with 3.0 to 4.0 mega-pixels will allow you to take and print beautiful, clear pictures.

The other major factor for your consideration is the type of zoom to invest in. Digital zoom is a common property of digital cameras, but isn't necessarily the best zoom. In fact the pictures can come out grainy looking. Optical zoom, although more costly, is a better choice. It gives a much higher quality result. If you don't plan to use the zoom much, then sticking with the digital zoom will save you some money.

Once you decide on a camera, consider purchasing a memory card along with it. Digital cameras often don't have enough storage for a vacation's worth of photos. Memory cards are fairly inexpensive and can store hundreds of your favorite pictures.

Make sure your digital camera comes with software giving you the ability to edit and manipulate your pictures. It can be quite basic, but you can do fun things like changing color to black and white or sepia. More sophisticated software lets you edit away objects or people you don't want in your shot.

Hopefully, these ideas helped you to decide what model digital camera to buy. Some people find new technology intimidating, but the new models are so easy and rewarding that you definitely should purchase one!
