Healthy living - Showing Way To Young Ones

By: George Petrova

Physical fitness is a tremendously important topic for school aged children today. These classes stress the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle that has become crucial now more than ever. With kids living a sedentary lifestyle and eating unhealthy diets, physical fitness should be a top priority in schools across this country. Unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, many school districts are forced to drastically cut or completely eliminate this part of education.

Children who learn proper physical fitness education are more likely to carry these lessons on into adult hood. In addition to basic fitness knowledge and information about sports and athletic events, physical education classes also serve as health instruction in many school districts.

Fitness classes serve as a guide for children informing them about the anatomy of the body, its basic development, first aid information and sexual education. We certainly don't want our kids to be learning all this at wrong places, so these sessions are the best place to inform them about it. The scope of physical fitness isn't limited to playing sports but it's about the quality of life.

One of the classic aspects of any physical education class is the President’s Physical Fitness program. Children attempt to complete a series of tasks set by a Presidential panel in order to receive a certificate of achievement. For many children, this certificate is a source of great pride and shows kids of al ages and skill levels they can accomplish a goal.

The lifestyle of the present generation of kids is such that the only means of exercise for them are the physical fitness exercises. The lives of children are steeped in comfort with either their parents dropping them in cars to schools or they go by bus or cab in contrast with the students in the past who used to either walk, or go by bicycle getting some exercise in turn. After spending hours sitting in the classrooms usually children spend their remaining time by playing video games, surfing Internet or watching television. So, these fitness sessions are a must for them.

It's your duty to raise your voice when you hear of plans to discontinue physical fitness education program in your child's school. Talk about it to the Parent and Teacher Association or at a meeting of the school board. Try to suggest ways and means and offer alternatives, but make sure that the school continues with the programs without alteration.

It has been a common myth among parents that physical education is nothing but a distraction for the child. The importance of this session should not be undermined, as this is the base to introduce the children to a healthy life.

As a parent, you should encourage your child to participate in all the active extra curricular activities. Set an example for your child by leading a healthy lifestyle. Start a fitness regimen with your child and make sure not to let him or her pick up bad habits.
