Helpful Advice on Saving On Your Energy Bills

By: Rickie Sol

The holidays are a wonderful time, but opening your utility bill in January can make you drop to your knees. If you are tired of paying high energy costs, here are some things you can do.

1. If you have an attic, you undoubtedly are wasting money on your heating bill. Take a close look at the entrance to the attic. If it is a drop down from the ceiling, hot air is moving up and through it.

2. If you are going to be out of your home office for more than 20 minutes, turn off all the electrical accessories. Computers, stereos and the like suck up energy if you just leave them on.

3. Choosing Oil For Your Car – You cannot use just any old oil for your car. Using the wrong grade of oil can reduce mileage up to three percent. Check your car manual for the correct grade.

4. Clean Car Air Filters – Clean air filters on a car can increase fuel mileage by as much as 10 percent. Change the air filter every time you get a tune up.

5. Cut Lighting Costs – The lights in your home are huge money wasters. Switch to CFL lights. They last up to 10 times longer and cost less to run.

6. Heating Two Story Homes – Heat moves up, so you can manipulate it with your multi-level home. Close all vents other than on the lowest floor. Heat will migrate up and you will spend less.

7. The Electrical Grid – When it comes to renewable energy, you will quickly hear the term electrical grid. It refers the platform maintained by utilities across the country. With solar, you can feed energy into the grid when not using it.

8. Window Energy Wasters – If you turn on the heater or air conditioning, make sure all your windows are really closed. Most sliding windows will catch just before actually closing because of their locking mechanism.

9. Financing Energy Efficiency in New York – If you live in New York, you can get financing for buying energy efficient products for your home. Financing is up to $10,000 and can be used for purchase and installation.

10. Setting Tire Air Pressure – When filing your tires, use the guideline on the tire, not in the owners manual. Tires perform differently, so they are a better source for air pressure.

None of these changes will save you big bucks in the next month. Over time, however, they can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings. Every incremental change saves you money each and every month.
