How To Play Darts?

By: Sally Vilee

Darts is an old game that goes back to medieval times when it was one of the most popular means of amusement. It is a fun game that has absorbed the attention of players in many taverns, common rooms and billiard rooms in the past. It still continues to engross many in bars and in family game rooms.

There are basic rules to the game of darts, and there are variations. Once the basics are learned, however, the variations can be picked up and agreed between rivals before the game begins. No matter how you are playing, though, safety is a concern. Make sure that you are careful of others, as a dart can inflict serious and lasting damage.

Darts are usually played between two people or two teams. Every one usually gets nine throws before the beginning of the game, for warm-up purposes. After the warm up, it is time to determine which team or person goes first. Everyone get a turn, and the team or person who ends up closest to the bull's eye gets the first turn.

A turn, once the game begins, consists of three throws. There are usually two sets of darts, distinct from each other, which are used. The first set is thrown and left in place while the second set is thrown by the antagonist. This illustrates why first turn is important: the second person or team has fewer options.

There are few basic things to note before getting down to scoring. The darts that fall off the board in less than 5 seconds after the player's turn are not counted as valid. Then the darts that stick to another dart or fall of the board would also not be scored. However, the darts need not necessarily stay on the board after the person's turn. They need to stay only during the person's turn. Thus, the first person can count up the scores before second person or team use their turn.

Your score depends on the position where on the board the dart lands. The closer it is to the bull's eye, the higher will be your score. When you look at the target, you notice different wedges and rings intersecting them. In the outermost ring, you gain points according to the number hit. Inside the next ring, that number is doubled and inside the third ring it is tripled. There are two rings for the bull's eye: the outer is worth 25 points and the inner is worth 50 points.

After you know the basics you can get down to the enjoyable variations such as playing Cricket or '301'. You can either be the person who has a 301 score or the person who wants to reduce the other person's 301 down to zero. Points are given according to position on target. Cricket is more complicated and requires a lot of dart practice.

Darts is an old game with a rich heritage. In spite of the various modern means of amusement, it is still a fun way to spend an evening with family or friends because it offers opportunity for conversation as well as sport. You can enjoy this pastime if you know the basic rules of the game.
