How to Set Up and Manage Your Home Office

By: Vlad Ehrsam

Individuals worldwide are breaking the chains of the corporate world, in order to pursue a career that gives them a sense of self-worth and more time with their family. Operating a successful home-based business takes commitment, know how, and plenty of patience. Every day can be a challenge if you’re not prepared.

The biggest obstacle to conquer is your family. Each family member must know the importance of their cooperation, and the ‘work area’ in your home should be free of outside distractions. Take the time to discuss your vision of “how” your office should operate, and list ways they can help.

Use Basic Equipment

Before you start conducting business you want to make sure you have all the necessary tools, equipment, and supplies you need to make your business successful. These may include but are not limited to a computer, printer, fax machine, dedicated phone line, scanner, calculator, filing cabinet, and book shelf. You’ll also need office supplies, a desk and a chair. Make sure your work space is comfortable and quiet.

Avoid the Address Dilemma

Using your home address for your business is generally not a wise idea. You don’t want potential clients stopping by uninvited. A better idea is to get P.O Box at your local post office and use that exclusively. It will also seem more professional than using your home address.

Manage Your Time

While initially you may think that you’ll have much more time working from home, many people find that time management becomes more difficult. There are always things to do at home other than work. It is important to set aside time for work and time for family. Be sure not to let these two mix.

There are many different tools you can use to organize your time. Desk calendars, daily planners, or even e-mail programs such as Microsoft Outlook are perfect for planning your day. Prioritize and plan what you need to accomplish each day so you can organize your time around it. Be sure to leave time for breaks and lunch.

If you need to do business calls try and do them when everyone else is out. It can be very distracting to have others around. If someone else is always home be sure to keep your office door closed and ask family members to stay out.

Be Reasonable

Invest in software programs. Several software programs can assist you in operating your office more effectively. Take advantage of programs that will forward email messages, track inventory, and balance your accounts accurately. Today’s technology can work wonders if you allow it too.

Don’t overdo it. If you’re running a one person show, it’s important to make time for yourself and relax. Be sure to prioritize and be reasonable in what you can accomplish each day.

If you find yourself getting bogged down in clerical duties, ask family members for help. It will save you time and money and they will enjoy being needed. This will help your business become more efficient.

Setting up your own home business can be a stressful and time consuming venture. By organizing and planning right from the word go everything will seem to go much more smoothly.
