Male Pattern Baldness: Be Careful Where You Tread

By: Marlene Baliss

Millions of men around the world suffer from thinning hair, and worry that they will soon become completely bald. There are a variety of reasons for hair loss, but male pattern baldness is the most common, and one of the most frustrating.

If you are one of those men, then take some time to research and learn a bit about the condition, as doing so may itself ease your mind to some degree. There are possible remedies that might help your situation, depending on the state of your hair follicles and so on. However, keep in mind that most men will have hair that thins with age, and many of them also develop bald patches on the scalp. You are not alone in this, that is certain.

In the early stages of male pattern baldness, you can assume there are a variety of potential causes. Though not every cause has a corresponding solution, it can help to learn more about the problem in any case.

Male pattern baldness is most often attributed to genetics. It may result from either male or female genes passed down from your family. Often, baldness from genetics is related to dihyrdo-testosterone (DHT). The gene that indicates baldness causes a small amount of nutrients produced in your hair to react with your hormones and cause you to go bald as you age. The older you get, the more these compounds will react to each other and cause increased baldness or thinning of the hair.

Hormones are another factor related to male pattern baldness. This is especially apparent in testosterone, which changes as one ages. These changes lead to a reaction in the scalp area and hair nutrients, especially in the enzymes that are produced normally. These enzymes help the hair grow; however, when they interact with testosterone and other hormones, they can cancel each other out and lead to a reaction in the hair follicle. This can lead to thinning and loss of hair as the enzymes and hormones produce chemicals that are not healthy for the hair.

Some men find that their hair is falling out in chunks, or that thinning is taking place more rapidly than expected. Please consult a doctor if this is happening to you, as these things are not normal for male pattern baldness, but rather indicate a more serious health problem. There are many diseases or disorders that can be the source of this, so the only way to determine the problem is to talk to a health professional as soon as possible.

If you are experiencing male pattern baldness, you will want to know about a variety of treatments that can prevent further thinning and loss. By understanding the causes, as well as knowing what you can do to prevent it, you will be more likely to find an effective treatment. This may result in a reduction in thinning, and healthier hair as you age. Male pattern baldness is a common genetic and hormonal problem suffered by many men, and there are ways for you to get help in addressing the problem.

But be warned that there is a long history of charlatans and cheats operating in the hair loss treatment industry. So be careful about accepting claims of unknown products or companies. Check with friends or family members who have experience with male pattern baldness, and tread carefully.
