Multiple Births - The Preparation Ahead

By: Bruce Danos

If one baby is a blessing, then how about two, three, four, or even eight! Multiple births are becoming more common place these days than ever before. If you are faced with carrying more than one life, start planning now how you plan to care for your children when they arrive into this world!

Fertility treatments have resulted in multiple births fast becoming common. The mechanism behind these treatments is such that at times more than one sperm inseminates a single egg. Although, in usual cases, the result is the formation of one zygote that eventually becomes a fetus, in certain cases this method also results in the formation of several zygotes. Once the zygote starts developing into fetuses, the doctors can easily identify that the pregnancy is going to be abnormal.

Often parents have to take the decision to abort one or more of the zygotes to help the others survive to term. In fact, multiples are very rarely carried to term, especially if the mother is carrying more than two. A difficult decision, no doubt, but it has to be taken for the best interest of the other children. The doctors explain to the parents that it is better to ensure the health and safety of a few children instead of carrying five, six, seven, or even eight babies to term.

If you are faced with a situation in which you have to make such a decision, it is advisable to take an opinion from members of the clergy, doctors and people who have been through a similar situation in their lives. But once the die has been cast and the decision has been made, stick by it, whether you decide to go ahead with the risk or going through the procedure. The ball is in your court as it is your life. Thus do not feel any compulsion for either of the choices of either going or not going through the procedure.

Since the mothers are required to go to bed once the babies are developing, it is advisable to resolve any of the necessary business before the mother is confined to bed. As the multiples are not often carried till the term, the doctors attempt to stop the labor as long as possible.

Make preparations for the arrival of the babies. Set up a nursery and ask friends or family members for any pieces of furniture or other baby items that are necessary in a nursery. If you have to buy these items, check out the local thrift stores or yard sales. You might find these things at a reasonable cost. Since you will require more than one, your budget may not allow expensive purchase.

You will need all the help from your friends and family to take care of more babies when they arrive. As it is, you will need time to recover from pregnancy and birth. You can't possibly run a household and care for all the children all by yourself. So, it's best to make proper arrangements well in time. Both the parents may have to take time off work for a while in the beginning. However, sooner or later both of you will have to go back to work, so you should think of other arrangements as well.

Babies are a great blessing, but they are a lot of work, too. If you plan well, you can handle the situation perfectly and enjoy every one of them.
