New Jersey: A Wonderful Place To Live

By: Kerry Angeles

When your entire state lives in the shadow of the Big Apple, there is definitely a tendency to be overlooked. But even more than feeling like an obscure cousin to the largest city on the East Coast, New Jersey and the people who live there have come to be seen by residents of New York City as second class citizens.

There are several reasons for this view by many New Yorkers. For example, living in New York City can cost you an arm and a leg while New Jersey maintains affordable living prices. Citizens of New Jersey also commute into New York City for the higher wages even if they can't afford the million dollar apartments. The commute is beneficial because they save money on their living situation in New Jersey.

But actually, New Jersey residents have no reason to be jealous of their New York counterparts. New Jersey is a state that has a lot to offer both residents and visitors.

Here are just a few of the reasons why New Jersey is one of the greatest places to live and an exciting place in its own right.

Atlantic City might be the first thing you think of when someone mentions New Jersey. That is wonderful. Casinos currently dominate Atlantic City, but this wasn't always true. Casinos were not approved in Atlantic City until as late as 1976. Casinos were approved as means to revamp the economy because the manufacturing base pretty much no longer existed in the area.

Now, almost three decades later, Atlantic City is home to a dozen casinos. The Trump Taj Mahal Casino probably comes to mind when thinking of a place that you know of. People from New York city make the drive every day to play in the world famous casinos of Atlantic City which is known as "America's Favorite Playground."

You can also walk along the boardwalk in Atlantic City. Tourists go to this boardwalk every year. It has amusement attractions, casinos, and great restaurants.

On the other side of the boardwalk is six miles of beautiful beach that is a favorite retreat during the dog days of summer and has been known to attract a New Yorker every now and again. Atlantic City is also home to the annual Miss America Pageant which is another event that draws millions of dollars into state coffers every year.

Manhattan is the home to many great institutions of higher education including Columbia University. However, New Jersey also has top notch universities as well. Highly regarded Princeton University calls New Jersey home. Princeton, along with other great colleges and universities, is a destination for some of the brightest students around the globe.

New Jersey may indeed live in the shadow of a mammoth neighbor. It is also true that people from the state commute every week back and forth to New York City. But it is a mistake to believe that the state is devoid of interest or unworthy of attention. New Jersey is far from the illegitimate step child of New York and a great place to call home or visit.
