Pay-Per-Click Advertising

By: Vlad Ehrsam

PPC advertising, or Pay-Per-Click marketing, is the new kid on the block and is giving search engine optimization a run for its money. Actually, it is a very simple concept. Search engines find the most relevant websites to keyword searches and display them in order. Somewhere off to the side of these results another list of sites appears and these are the people that have opted to use PPC advertising. Every click on one of those website addresses to the side of the search engine rankings means that the owner of that site pays money for. PPC advertising offers website owners a number of distinctive advantages like:

Immediate Traffic. As with search engine optimization advertising, the people linking to your site already have an interest in the products or services you are offering so these are qualified prospects—the best kind! While search engine optimization advertising brings the visitors to your site for free, PPC advertisers do not have to shell out the time and money it takes to build search engine rankings. They are catapulted straight to the top of the rankings and only have to pay a small fee for qualified prospects.

Complete and total control over you advertising budget is a definite advantage in PPC advertising. The system works like this: You have to bid on the keywords so if you owned a site selling Tiffany lamps you might be willing to shell out a dime every time someone typed in the keyword “lamp” into a search engine. So, you are willing to pay out $.10 every time a surfer clicks onto your site. If you only invested $50 a month into your advertising budget, that would translate into 500 times that people could link to your site from the top of the search engine results for the word “lamp” before your link was taken off of the page. Of course, in order to get that keyword you are going to have to outbid everyone else for it. Ultimately, it will come down to how much you think a premium keyword like “lamp” is worth and how badly you need traffic at your site.

PPC advertising also allows you to make immediate adjustments in your marketing strategy. If the companies that offer Pay-Per-Click services see that even though many people visit your site they don't make purchases, they will point it out to you. Thus, you can modify your site on the basis of all kinds of useful information they will provide. You can place your ads and links at places where people go within your site more often.

Pay-Per-Click really does not have any downsides. It is nothing short of complete marketing coup to have immediate access to the top of the search engine rankings. Instantaneous traffic translates into immediate access to a targeted audience. You need not worry about costs getting out of control because you have complete control over how much you spend every month. In addition, with feedback and statistics provided, you can make continual adjustments to your site to maximize profits. Pay-Per-Click advertising is the most efficient form of marketing yet devised and a true blessing for website owners.
