Places not to be missed in Berlin!

By: Rufus Fitzgerlad

The Capital city of Germany, Berlin is a city of lavish history. It has seen a number of historical events that changed the course of history. Each event added to its architectural grandeur. Whether you are eating, drinking, entertaining in Berlin, or going around the city for sightseeing, there are a few must haves on your Berlin itinerary.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is one of the latest sightseeing stops in Berlin, opened recently in May 2005. Located near downtown Berlin, it is within easy access of public transportation. The memorial is surrounded by a beautiful garden. It depicts histories and stories of people killed during World War II. It stands as a reminder of what could happen again if we do not learn lessons from history.

East Side Gallery. This is a mile long stretch of the Berlin wall. It is the longest portion of the wall still standing, and it covered with artwork. There are many emotional and political statements on the wall, contributing to the powerful feelings evoked by looking at it. There are many colors, and it contrasts sharply with the surrounding cityscape.

Charlottenburg Palace. This palace is a stunning example of Baroque architecture. The grounds are delightful as well. Built in the late 17th Century as the summer residence for Sophie Charlotte. While a guided tour is not necessary to see some of the opulent rooms, to see all of the splendid sights, a tour must be taken. The tours are in German, but information sheets in other languages are provided.

St. Nicholas Church: This old church has dauntingly faced the trials of time. It has witnessed several historical events leaving their mark on it. It was here that the agreement to unite Berlin and Colin into Berlin was signed in 1307. Over the time several changes took place in its structure. Presbytery and two ornamental towers were added to it but they were destroyed in the Second World War and were not restored to remind us all of what havoc wars can cause.

Brecht Weigel Museum. This is a house that was the home of playwright Bertolt Brecht and his actress wife Helene Weigel. The house is an interesting tour, as it gives history of the Berliner Ensemble, and "epic theater" company. Additionally, it is a good source of interesting information of the Berlin theatrical scene (especially since it is located in East Berlin) and includes hundreds of thousands of manuscripts and a collection of printed works. A restaurant, the Keller, is located downstairs and offers good food.

Potsdam's Gardens are located about 25 minutes away from Berlin by train, in a town called Potsdam. You can see many beautiful gardens and spend the day relaxing and enjoying the beautiful sights and fragrant smells.

There is plenty more to see in Berlin, but these are some things of historical and cultural value in Berlin that should not be missed.
