Running Errands to Earn Extra Income

By: David Forsythe

In the present scenario where incomes can't keep pace with expenditure, almost everyone tries to do a side job to add to the income. The ground reality is that most people do not earn enough to make both ends meet, leave alone extra money for enjoyment and entertainment. No wonder, millions of Americans have been compelled to think of unique and creative ways to earn some extra money.

Financial experts very often advice us to make investments in mutual funds and annuities. However, the truth is that one needs some set aside money to make these investments. People have now started turning their expertise into profitable ways of making that extra bit of money.

There are a lot of people who have some extra cash to spare but no time. Then there are those who have enough time but not enough cash. The two can mutually gel to get some good results. The latter can run errands for the former and make some extra bucks that certainly won't hurt. You can think of making profit out of doing simple work for people such as Grocery shopping, gift shopping, running movies back, picking up dry cleaning, and a host of other rather tedious activities that can be easily handled by you. Thus, you can make money out of running errands.

The start up cost for errand services are comparatively low. You do not have those heavy investment and financing considerations to make. All you need is a computer to help track business expenses, generate invoices, and perform general bookkeeping duties, a cell phone to always stay accessible to your clients, some business cards and a necessary business license and bingo, you are ready to go and make some extra bucks out of an errand service.

In the beginning it may be difficult to get people who are willing to shell out money to run errands. Remember, errand service relies greatly on word-of-mouth promotion making every successfully or miserably done task an advertisement (bad or good) for the subsequent business clients. You must consider marketing your business at places like fitness clubs, coffee shops, and beauty salons. These people let you leave your business card for people to look at and get your number from.

You must carefully study the demographics of the market to know who you need to target. Then only you must try to build a customer base. The likely customers for an errand service are business professionals and small business owners. These people have enough money but no time to run their errands. So you can focus on targeting these people.

You can start off with dong little work for friends and family, taking little or no charge. It helps you get good experience and build references in this word-of-mouth business. This is sure to generate more business for you down the road. Finally you can move on to serving more people at a higher cost.

Even if you never visualized doing something like this, the fact remains that running an errand service is a viable means of earning some extra income, and has unlimited income potential. Once you establish your errand business, you can earn anything between 15 to 100 dollars an hour for your services. And, if all goes well this part-time business can turn into your full-time profession that gives you the freedom and financial independence that was not possible doing a job.
