The Different Types Of Glass Available

By: Jonathon Midel

Glass has been used for building decor for many years and doesn't always have to be functional. Sometimes people want to use glass and glass effects to beautify and creatively improve the look of a building. Many modern buildings feel cold and stark when only modern glass is installed.

Leaded glass has always been a favorite among designers. It's called "leaded glass" as the panels in the window are bound together with lead strips. The name of these strips or pieces is "cames". This technique is popular because lead is easy to bend around the glass shapes, due to its flexibility. Once the leaded glass panes are completed, they can be used in numerous buildings, including houses and churches.

Another nice thing about leaded glass is that it can also be manufactured with patterns and textures. This texturing adds a more distinctive and artistic look to the leaded glass without hindering the strength or performance of the glass. Anyone looking for a unique pane of glass for a particular room in their home won't go wrong with leaded glass.

Another type of glass that is commonly used to decorate the house is the stained glass. People specially use stained glass to decorate their front entry halls since it gets regular attention especially from guests. Stained glasses have been used for centuries to decorate homes. Many building around the world speak volumes of the decorative usefulness of the stained glasses.

Stained glasses are actually leaded glasses which are filled with colors and patterns. Color pigments can be added to the glass during the manufacturing process to make it stained and more decorative. Color can be added even if the cut patterns of clear glass have been incorporated together by painting clear glass with color. The paint is made with a mixture of color pigments and powdered glass. To make color a part of the glass after painting, the painted glass is placed inside a kiln to melt the pigments and make it stick to the clear glass and turn into a stained glass.

Etching is another way to create lovely patterns in glass. The etching or marking is achieved by applying chemicals or abrasives to a piece of clear glass. Etchers can make any type of design or pattern to the glass. Many of today's home builders are installing etched glass as a decorative feature of entry halls of bigger homes. They also apply it to glass doors or windows that are a main point of interest in other rooms.

"Dalle de Verre" is another variety of glass which is also known as the faceted type of glass. The "faceted" look on the glasses is created by taking thicker pieces of glass and chipping their edges. Large buildings are ideal place for such type of faceted glasses for its effect to be properly reflected.

Whatever glass you choose for your new house you will probably have the same goal as others: the combination of glass function and the creation of a beautiful and unique decor. Make picking out glass for your home a fun experience and think of the beautiful rooms you'll make by your choice of window treatments.
