The Resurgence of Board Games For Adults

By: Helen Filarinski

Board games for adults were very popular in the 1970s and they are seeing renewed interest from people, especially those in their 20s and 30s. Many people love playing board games at parties with large groups of people. And with all the fun new board games coming out there's no shortage of fun to be had.

A very popular board game that almost guarantees a good time for all people in a party is Cranium. This game was made popular when it was sold in Starbucks. Cranium is a confluence of many other games such as word games, charades, Pictionary, and spelling bees. This amazing combination of all these games allows wide spread participation where in people with different skills can enjoy.

Whenever you have a large group of people in a party, Taboo is a game that can be played easily. This decades old game is a great icebreaker and is very easy to play. This game entails getting your team to guess a particular word without saying several key words that would easily tip them off. Its ease of playing without any requirement of props makes Taboo one amongst the best sellers.

Balderdash is a game that many people will remember from the 1980s but it is seeing renewed popularity in the past few years. Everyone is given an extremely obscure word that they must make up a definition for. One person must try to guess what the real definition is, which proves to be very difficult. This is a great game that let's everyone be creative and it's great fun listening to what everyone has come up with.

Twister is a totally retro game that is great for a group of four friends. This game requires you to be good friends as you may end up in some compromising positions.

Trivial Pursuit, an interesting game for those that recall odd bits of trivia, has gone through many evolutions since it was first introduced. One of the most current editions features 1990s trivia questions, which could be a lot of fun for those that grew up in the pop culture time. Trivial Pursuit is a great game for people with a little more history to draw upon.

Drinking games are a popular past time at parties. There are many different kinds you can play with just a deck of cards or pair of dice. However, game companies are coming out with drinking board games, which were very popular back in the 1960s and 1970s. The latest is a game called I Never. This is a great way to find out facts about your friends that you never would have known, as well as enjoy a few drinks. Be sure to have a designated driver or a place for your friends to crash as you can end up drinking quite a bit.

The days when games were designed only for kids are passe. Now adults too enjoy board, card, and dice games during parties and get together. Adult games can get a party going especially when everyone doesn't know each other. Game companies are increasingly launching older games and inventing new ones to corner this new market.
