Hamsters that get regular exercise can live happy, healthy lives.  Just like humans, hamsters require plenty of regular exercise.

Exercise wheels are the preferred exercise toy for most hamster owners.  When choosing an exercise wheel, look for wheels that provide a solid surface that attaches firmly to the side of the cage.  Wire wheels may save you a buck or two, but the risk for injury increases, as hamsters can get their limbs caught in the open spaces between the wheel bars.

While most hamsters are completely satisfied with an exercise wheel, you can enhance your hamster’s enjoyment and activity level by providing mazes and toys as alternative play and exercise activities. Whatever activity or area you provide your hamster, make sure to properly secure the area so your hamster cannot escape.

Mange is a common skin condition that occurs in adult hamsters.  Mange is generally an irritation of the skin that can cause redness and hair loss.

Mange is caused by a skin-dwelling parasite that burrows into the pet’s skin and feeds off of the hamster’s tissue.  Hamsters typically will experience itching and irritation. If you notice your pet losing large clumps of hair on the back or underbelly, you may need to contact a veterinarian.

Mange is typically treated by injecting Ivermecting – usually given weekly for up to four weeks.  Depending on the type of mange diagnosed by the veterinarian, some topical ointments may be used.
