Kids and Dogs
If you have a dog in your home, or any kind of pet for that matter, does it seem like kids form the closest bond with that dog? I remember losing two of my favorite dogs, both of which died during my growing up years – the kids were definitely more distraught than were my parents.
Just this last week I noticed how my youngest son is developing a love for a dog and how disappointed he is if he can’t find his favorite playmate. It seems like as an adult I enjoy the association with pets, but kids seem to form a deeper, more dependent relationship with the dog. This realization has helped my wife and I understand that while a family pet is referred to as a “family” pet, the strongest bonds cause us to want to refer to the dog as the belonging to the kids.
