POTENTIAL HAZARDS FOR CATS

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Keeping your cats safe around the house is important for you and for your beloved pet. Here are some precautions to take to keep everyone happy.

Some cats like chewing on electrical cords. Unplug cords that are dangling and look interesting to your cat.

Look out for poisonous plants. Some common house plants like Easter lilies are toxic to cats and can be lethal if consumed.

Remove tablecloths from your tables. Cats can be curious about what is on your table and will use the tablecloth to climb. Broken dishes could be the result of your cats interest.

Close appliance doors. Cats love to explore. Always check inside your dryer and other appliances before starting their use.

Cover your furniture. To avoid cat hair on your nice couch or chair put an old sheet or other cover over them.

Cover electrical switches in the kitchen and bathrooms. Cats have been known to climb on the kitchen or bathroom counter and play with electrical switches. This can be dangerous when that switch turns on the garbage disposal.

Wind up dangling drapery cords. Cats can strangle themselves by getting their necks caught while playing with the cord.

Taking these and other precautions will keep both you and your pet happy and healthy.

Christmas Presents For Your Dog

Monday, December 15th, 2008

I know we are anxious to please our kids and grandkids with the right toy at Christmas, but have you thought that your dog may want a new toy for Christmas as well? If you have not given this some consideration, you should.

The right toy should fit the size and personality of your furry friend. Some canine’s are strong chewers and need a denser toy. Others like the soft, plush style of toy. It is important that you consider safety when choosing the right toy. Buy the size that your dog can’t swallow especially if they like to run around with it. Read labels carefully to insure there is nothing toxic. Make sure tags, labels, packaging, etc., get thrown out so the dog won’t chew on something that could be harmful. Check their toys regularly and throw out the ones that have been chewed to the point where it could be swallowed.

Some dogs want mental stimulation. Consider a toy with a treat inside that they must figure out how to get to. There are plastic cubes with treats inside that have various levels of difficulty which can be purchased. If your dog just wants a ball to chase, you might think about getting one that can help with oral hygiene. This type of ball has grooves, which stimulate the gums and clean the teeth as they chew it.

All dogs want attention and crave the love of their master and family. Treat your dog to a new toy, but make sure it fits their profile. Have a Merry Christmas!

Miniature Schnauzers Make Great Family Pets

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Looking for a great family pet to give the kids for Christmas? Consider a Miniature Schnauzer dog. They are loving, intelligent, energetic, affectionate, and obedient. They are great with children. They are a very happy and playful dog. They socialize well and make great companions even for adults.

Schnauzers are part of the Terrier group. They were originally bred for catching mice and make great guard dogs. The dog usually weighs between 10-15 pounds and grows to a height of 12-14 inches. The breed sheds little or no hair and would fit well into a family with allergies.

From my experience having owned two Schnauzers, the love to go on walks and enjoy the outdoors. They age well and are playful even as they get older. Their life expectancy is about 15 years.
