« Four Expert Safety Tips For Dealing With An Aggressive Iguana Puppy Behavior – Instructing Your Pet To Act Appropriately »

Everything You Need To Know About Iguana Hypothyroidism

Your iguana’s thyroid gland is responsible for producing various hormones. These hormones control various bodily functions. When the gland isn’t able to function properly because of a lack of iodine, hypothyroidism occurs. So, what exactly causes this condition?

Cause

The presence of too many chemicals can prevent the body from using iodine properly. These chemicals, called goitrogens, are present in a variety of foods. Kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts are some of the most common foods that contain goitrogens.

Signs

If your lizard is suffering from this disease, he will display a range of symptoms. The most prominent sign is inactivity or general lethargy. Hypothyroid iguanas will also have a reduced growth rate. If the condition is left untreated, the thyroid gland will eventually start to swell up. When the gland swells, your iguana will develop a goiter.

Hypothyroid iguanas are usually tame and easy to handle. If your normally aggressive iggie suddenly becomes tame for no apparent reason, this condition may be the problem.

Treatment

This condition is usually easy to treat. Your iguana will simply have to reduce the amount of goitrogen-containing foods that he consumes. You should eliminate foods that contain goitrogens altogether. However, reducing them will also help improve the condition. Although some iguanas may need to take iodine supplements, this isn’t usually necessary.

Prevention

Owners can easily prevent their iguanas from developing hypothyroidism. You just have to avoid feeding your iguana the aforementioned foods that contain goitrogens. Although you don’t have to stop feeding them altogether, you should only feed them occasionally.
