Winter Escape

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

All of us can get cabin fever with the cold winter days upon us. Your pet dog can get it too! If your thoughts are turning to fresh ocean breezes and sunsets over San Diego Bay, consider taking your pet with you. Your dog can use the exercise and sunshine to stay healthy. Mission Beach Park is a great place for your pet. It has miles of glorious sand overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

For sightseeing, be sure to add Coronado Island to your schedule. Coronado Island is on a peninsula across the bay near downtown San Diego. It is home to the famous Hotel del Coronado. This family-oriented island with its quaint coves and tide pools is very popular with vacationers. There is lots to do and explore. The trolley takes you around San Diego Bay stopping at the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park and the Seaport Village shops amongst other places. If you wish to sail across San Diego Bay, take the gondola ride or the ferry ride.

There are pet-friendly hotels in downtown San Diego near the 4.3 acre waterfront park along the bay. Both the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, and Hotel Indigo(which has partnered with the San Diego Humane Society) are highly reccommended places to stay. The Bayfront has breath-taking views of the bay. In the afternoon, walk your dog in the waterfront park near your hotel, or take a 8 mile drive north of downtown San Diego to Mission Beach Park where your dog can splash in the ocean. Dine and shop at the famous Gaslamp Quarter. Before traveling, check and make sure that your dog carrier, like the Pet-A-Scope carrier, is airline-friendly. Some dog carriers can be adapted for car rides too. For your convenience, have your pet carry its own water bottle and food in a dog back pack. Most dogs can carry one fourth of their body weights. Do a few short training walks using a 6 to 8 foot retractable dog leash to get an idea of your pet’s abilities. Your pup will feel useful working up an appetite. You will want some paddings under the pack. A good comfortable fit is important. A collapsible dog bowl is convenient to take with you when its feeding time. Don’t forget to outfit your dog with a Cinch-It waterproof dog collar for the trip especially if you plan on spending time by the water.

If you wish to do something special, treat your pet at Camp Run-A-Mutt (3265 India St, San Diego) which is located about 2 miles north of downtown San Diego. The outdoor area with turf, waterfall and pond is great! Your dog will have lots of fun in a fully-supervised, safe and cage free environment, and will be tired but happy to see you after you have been gone all day sightseeing.

Have fun on your winter escape traveling with your favorite pet! With some careful planning, it will be a win-win proposition. Take lots of photos, and bring back lovely memories. For more info about pet gear, please visit these links: dog collarssuper pet

Happy Cats: Indoors Or Outdoors

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Until my recent visit to my Mother’s home, I have always felt sorry for cats that are never allowed to go outside. It just seems to go against the intentions of Mother Nature. My own two cats really enjoy their cat door we had installed just so they can go in and out as they please. And it gives me so much peace of mind knowing they can get in when I am gone, especially if they aren’t in when I go. Before having the cat door, if they weren’t in when I left for work, I would feel so bad knowing they had to spend the day outdoors waiting for my return, even though I knew there were places they could take shelter from bad weather.

However my sister has expensive, adorable cats, especially chosen to minimize allergy problems, and they are as happy as any cats I have ever encountered. Why? Well start with all the crazy and imaginative toys she has for them. This long tunnel thing they run around in; the circular toys with the balls they bat around. Various perches and hideaways. She even got a very nice bird cage and put several parakeets in it, made sure it was constructed so as to keep the cats out and sturdy enough to not tip over as they are checking it out, and it’s like their own personal TV show. Same with the aquarium, with colorful goldfish. They can’t get in but they sure enjoy looking in.

And here’s the clincher. They go out for “walks” in her Kittywalk Stroller. They love it! She also just takes them out in it when she works in the garden, and positions it in different places in the yard, so they can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine and be close to her, which appears to be their favorite place to be. No surprise there…

So I have had to revise my opinion, these cats look as healthy and happy as they get. Having said all this, I have no regrets letting my own two go outdoors, and would not change that. I even go spend time in the yard just to please them, as their favorite time to be out there seems to be with us. The longer we are out there the longer they stay out too. The playful one likes to jump on my back from behind and leap over my head as I squat down to pull weeds. I guess I have a strong heart as the shock hasn’t caused a heart attack yet.

So I know there are pros and cons as far as the indoor vs. outdoor approach with cats. I can happily say mine don’t have a strong hunting instinct and don’t bring me dead birds or rodents (have had those kind in the past). A lot depends on one’s lifestyle and living situations. In the end I think our cats can be healthy and happy with either situation, if we are responsible and loving owners.
