In the jungle, an animal dares not show signs of weakening as this would encourage its predators to attack it as they see it is vulnerable. This action is triggered by the animal’s survival instinct which is also present in your pet so it would try as much as it can to hide its pain and discomfort unless you know how to tell.
To help pet owners manage properly their pet health by better understanding their pets actions, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) has graciously provided some guide to help in doing this.
A careful observation of our pet is very vital if we would succeed in deciphering the signs they may be showing and managing their pain and or discomfort.
The first thing to watch out for is your pet’s chewing habit. Dropping of its food and or chewing with only a part of its mouth is one sign to watch out for in your pet. These could easily be as a result of a dental problem or a problem in the mouth. If you pet has bad breath or begins to rub its face too much, it could be another sign of a dental discomfort. In order to either avoid prevent or treat these dental challenges, we should schedule our pets for regular dental check ups.
Massive weight loss or gain is a second sign to watch out for. A change in your pets eating habit and its weight is most often the first things affected when they are in pain. Another thing is this. If your pet is carrying around excess weight, they are more likely to damage a joint or tear a ligament. Your pet would find it difficult to bend and access its food if it has arthritis pain or even muscle soreness. This can have two effects. 1, If your pet can’t access its food due to the pain, then it would likely lose weight. 2, If despite the pain it can still maintain its feeding habit, then it would likely add weight due to the fact that the pain would not allow it exercise. On the other hand, the pain can cause it to lose its appetite.
