How Not To Treat Your Teddy Bear

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Isn’t it ironic that perhaps the most loved toy a child has is a teddy bear? Ironic also that lovers often give teddy bears to their partners with little hearts and loving messages on them.

You may ask what is ironic about that. Well, the way living bears are treated by humans is barbaric.

Did you know that over 12,000 bears are kept captive in Asia in cages where they cannot stand up and can barely turn around? They cannot hibernate as bears do as they cannot lie down because of the bars they have to lie on. These bears are kept for their bile and the process of extracting it would make you weep. These beautiful creatures have tube inserted into their abdomen leading to their gall bladder to extract the bile. The wound is opened up to three times a day to prevent it from healing so that the bile can be extracted as it builds up. This of course often leads to infection, abscesses and great pain. These beautiful animals can do nothing to stop it. Another method is to insert a syringe into the gall bladder to extract the bile. It is not a veterinary surgeon that carries out these procedures, more often than not it is a farm hand. bears|animals|pets|teddy bears| bile|bear baiting

The bile is used in Asian medicine which is quite unnecessary as herbal and alternatives are available.

You have probably heard of bear baiting. Yes, this practice still exists in Pakistan where a bear has it’s teeth removed and is tied up and set upon by fighting dogs. They usually have a ring inserted into their noses which is attached to a chain. The bears must endure constant fights – his flesh is torn and he is not allowed to die. Bear baiting is held at fairs and other events and is considered a form of entertainment. Although it is illegal it still exists.

I’m sure you remember the dancing bears. This occurs in India where the bear’s nose is pierced and a rope is passed through the wound. It keeps the bear in check and he must do as his master bids. I have heard that in circuses bears are made to stand on iron barrels. What the audience doesn’t know is that the platform on which he stands is heated from underneath so that it is so hot that the bear cannot stand still. The pads on his paws become blistered and infected and yet he is made to do this day after day.

Perhaps some bear paw soup? In Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan or Taiwan, if you’re prepared to pay US$1000 you can have your fill of beer paw soup. They don’t have to capture the bear; he’s in a cage out the back and kept alive. His paw is hacked off and your order is prepared. Of course when the next order comes in, another paw is hacked off and so on until he has no paws left. He is then bludgeoned to death and eaten. I cannot tell you the manner of killing, it distresses me too much, but you can source this information from the internet if interested.

Fortunately there are organizations out there trying to stop these horrific practices. We all need to lend our weight and support to these agencies; they rely on donations and volunteers.

I’m sure that you now appreciate the irony of that beloved teddy bear that children take to bed with them. The bear is a beautiful creature and I find it hard to comprehend man’s lack of compassion and the depths of his cruelty. bears|animals

Choosing a Family Pet

When you have kids, they can often drive you crazy by hounding for a dog or a cat. Some parents are reluctant to give their child a pet due to fear of the animal harming the child being forefront in their minds. There are many dog and cat breeds that you can have in your home that will do really well for you and your family—even with small children. There are, of course, some precautions to make.

First, we will look at dog breeds. There are certain dog breeds that demand respect and kids often don’t have those feelings. Most children do not understand that pulling on the pet’s tail or stroking too roughly can not only harm the animal, but make it resentful of the child. You can of course work with your child to help him develop proper pet-handling behavior, but you should first consider starting out with a pet breed that is best for children.

For instance, the following dog breeds are well-known for being especially good with children: St. Bernards, Golden and Labrador Retrievers, Great Danes, German Shepherds, Poodles, Siberian Huskies, and Mastiffs. While you do have to be careful about their size and make sure they are socialized and housetrained, they make wonderful pets. They are very affectionate and tend to exercise care and protectiveness of the children.

These dog breeds will also stand up to a certain amount of abuse. If the child pulls on the tail or accidentally falls into them they are more likely to be worried and protective rather than distasteful or aggressive. You do have to teach your kid to be respectful, but generally these dogs as pets will offer a wonderful family addition.

In general, most cats are going to have issues with children. With cats, who are not as easy to train, you will find they tend to nip or bite a child who pulls their ears/tail or hurts them in any way. It is the cat’s way of showing anger. Cats by nature tend to choose one owner. This owner usually showers them with affection and treats them properly. If you do introduce a cat into your household, you should make sure your children are old enough to understand and exercise the proper treatment of it.
Typically you want a child no younger than three dealing with any pet, especially cats. At this age the kid is old enough to understand right from wrong and deal with the pain if the cat bites them for a good reason. Some cats you may want in your home include the Abyssinian, American bobtail, American shorthair, Balinese, Birman, Bombay, Burmese, Manx, Persian, and Siberian.

Typically you should not have a Siamese cat around children, as they tend to be very moody and are often one who demands respect. When you consider getting a pet for your child, it is important to realize that not all pets are great for a home.

Pet Medicine Online For Conscious Dog Owners

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

In today’s hectic world it seems we are at a loss for the time we need to make educated decisions, particularly when your pet suddenly falls sick or has an ongoing condition. So what can you do when you know your pet needs a pet medication or treatment? Like most pet owners, you probably make a run for your nearest veterinarian and hope you don’t lose your shirt.

Unfortunately for a lot of pet owners, a visit to the vet will be . Just visiting for a general consultation or diagnosis is costly enough. For lots of people it can mean a complete week’s paycheck down the drain, and that’s being conservative…

If your pet needs medication, brace yourself for distress because it may cost you an arm and a leg if you buy your meds from the vet. Buying pet meds at the vet can cost you significantly more than if you purchase it elsewhere, just because the vet has significant overhead costs and has to mark up the price on pet medications to churn out more cash.

So, where can one get high quality pet medicine online? It may be more simple than you realize. If the medication you need is just for example, flea medicine, then you can get it on the internet from one of the numerous discount pet medicine stores. You don’t need a prescription for most pet flea medicine, so it can easily be purchased on the internet and delivered right to your doorstep.

In the case that your veterinarian prescribes your pet Rx medication, don’t be concerned you can still find your pet meds online. You will just need the prescription when you are completing the order, or you will need to give it soon after. Many online pet meds stores will call your vet and validate the prescription if you do not have it directly available to you.

What if your vet does not want to provide the prescription? Well, luckily most veterinarians are now very used to the procedure and are somewhat cooperative. They are still receiving your patronage anyway, and the majority of vets realize that people are trying to conserve as much as they possibly can these days.
