    Turtles are very difficult to keep in captivity, and require a large living space. They will need a UVA/B lamp; these are expensive and need to be changed every six months. Unlike a dog or cat, they live a long time, some species up the 30-40 years. This is a huge commitment, if you are not up to it, stick with a more traditional pet.

    Also, it is illegal in most states to remove a turtle from the wild. If you do decide to get a turtle, purchase a non-native one from a reputable breeder.
