Filters For Your Fish Aquarium

If you have aquarium at home, you probably know that the most important thing is to have a good filter. If you are just about to start up aquarium, then you have to get all possible information on types of aquarium filters in order to provide your fish with healthy environment. However, the best filters are not necessary expensive filters. The main thing is to choose the one that is going to suit your aquarium best, cleaning it and creating proper conditions. Believe it or not, but good filter can be relatively cheap.
The first thing you should know about aquarium filters is that there are three stages of filtration – biological, chemical and mechanical. First two stages are based on the transformation of chemical waste in aquarium, such as ammonia and nitrites. They are transformed into neutral matters, which are not harmful for your aquarium. The last, mechanical stage is based on the destruction of solid waste such as fish food particles, parts of weeds, etc. However, there are more important features of filters you should know before buying aquarium.
One of the most special aquarium filters is the undergravel filter. It is usually installed above your fish tank bottom, so that there is a space between the filter plate and the bottom of aquarium. Invisible bacteria live in this space, supporting neutral environment in your tank. So, these bacteria are not harmful and even vice versa – they are essential for normal functioning of your aquarium. A great alternative to the undergravel filter is a sponge filter. The bad thing about sponge filters is that you have to remove the sponge from the filter after a certain period of time and replace it. Hence, the whole work made by bacteria and all bacteria that have propagated within the sponge are also removed together with it. After you install a new sponge, the whole work starts from the very beginning and bacteria have to be propagated again. It means that your fish can be endangered while new bacteria are growing.
If you want to save your bacteria colony, you have to stick to the following pattern. Remove your old sponge filter and clean it. The second filter should be unclean. This way you will save the colony, made by bacteria in one filter, while new bacteria are propagating in the second filter. A week or two later remove the second filter and clean it. The first filter will have produced enough bacteria by that time. Such approach will help you to save colonies of useful bacteria, which will not subject your fish to dangerous ammonia levels in your aquarium.
Using these simple strategies you will always have clean fish tank and healthy
