There are many dreams for stuff you can do with your kids during the summer months, but you could fall short on nature actions in the winter because you are restricted by the climate and the temperature. The typical winter things to do include sledding, skiing, and construction snow creations, but you do not have as much in the way of communication with your natural world as you do in the summer. If you want to get the wildlife nearby to your house, feeding them in the winter is the way to go. In fact, for great fun with your kids that can be quite an education as well, think about feeding wild birds in your yard.

Birds will approach in the summer if you put out bird seed, but feeding wild birds in the winter is much more pleasurable because additional birds will come. They do not have the same variety of natural food sources available to them in the winter when the snow is covering the ground as they do in the summer when everything is uncovered, fresh, and green. Not only will you get more birds in the winter months, you will get a larger diversity of birds, some of which you may have in no way seen before.

You have to have a fairly quiet area for feeding wild birds if you want to get a lot of them. You can do this if you live in town, but you do want to be on a quiet street. If you live in a more rural area, you are going to have the the majority chance. When finding your home turf is just too busy most of the time, see if you know someone with land that would let you give provisions wild birds there. You can put out your seed and then go there when you have the time to see what kinds of birds show up.

Feeding wild birds can be done in a few different ways. You can put up bird houses that dispense provisions or you can simply throw the provisions out on your yard. Make sure you toss it out after it is done snowing rather than in the middle of a storm or your feed food is going to be covered and will not do you much good. Once a good snow has fallen and the storm has passed, birds are looking for provisions and they will find it in your yard. Expect to see many neat birds in all numerous colors.
