Is your pet sneezing and rubbing its eyes or relentlessly scratching and itching? Is your pet having coat problems, skin problems or ear conditions? Your pet may suffer from pet allergies, just like you or me. But allergies in pets are more often manifested in the skin and ears. Signs include a poor coat, skin irritation or constant ear infections. Pet allergies can vary from food based allegies to environmentally caused and seasonal allergies. Most pet owners find it extremely difficult to sit by and watch as their pet suffers from an allergic condition. Well, there is good news. We can offer our pets some allergy relief.
First, identify the allergen. Could your pet be allergic to something in its food? You will have to study your pet’s eating behavior and alter its diet. Is your pet having a possible reaction to to the fabrics he encounters? Many pets are allergic to their bedding. Pets can also develep a reaction to outdoor allergens like pollen. If your pet only suffers during certain times of the year, the problem is probably seasonal. If he does suffer all year round, your pet may be allergic to mold or dust.
Pet allergies and skin irritation can be treated with epsom salt baths or a medicated shampoo. Just make sure your pet doesn’t drink any of the water when being treated. These remedies offer temporary relief. More long term solutions can include pet allergy shots or antihistamines, particularly for seasonal pet allergies. It sometimes takes a lot of observation to determine what type of allergies may be affecting your pet. Just like with a human child, you may need to feed your pet a highly controlled homemade diet, to identify the allergen. No matter what allergies your pet may be dealing with, it’s always advisable to consult your veterinarian. My second lhasa apso had bad allergies – to certain proteins. He developed severe skin reactions in the form of darkened skin at his front underarms and loss much hair. Was also smelly in a way too. He was also very prone to ear and eye infections. We kept testing him on different foods until we found two types of proteins that he could tolerate well which were fish and duck. We ended up on a special dog food made with only duck protein and he did well with it for life.
