How To Give The Effective Caring For A Baby Ferret
Ferrets need more protein and higher-quality fat than cats and less carbohydrate. A good brand of ferret food is costly but there is really no excuse not to give ferrets best food because they eat only small amounts. As in any expensive pet food, quality can be seen in the ingredients not in the brand of the ferret food. Try to check for the protein and fat content. It should at least read 20% fat and 35% protein. Proper caring for a baby ferret is very important and must be done on a regular basis.
Make sure there is fresh water available in a dish or ferret’s water bottle and must be changed every day. However, ferrets drink more water in bowls than in bottles. Baby Ferrets like dairy products but these dairy products lead them to diarrhea so do not expose them to ice cream or milk.
DO’S in caring for Baby Ferrets:
1. Provide good shelter – a good shelter would mean a spacious area for ferrets to move and for cleaning purposes. The space for cage bars should be thin so that the ferret’s head will not fit in or you end up chasing your ferret back in the cage. Make it a habit to let ferrets play outside the cage. Beddings of the ferret must be cleaned once a week or daily. You can also train your ferrets when and where to waste just by placing a little amount of waste in the litter area. You’ll see ferrets learn so easily. Just patiently show to them when and where to waste and soon you will be surprised to see they are disciplined and waste only in the waste box.
2. Give Rattles and Toys – Ferrets like to play toys such as baby rattles. Do not leave toys to ferrets unsupervised or they end up eating the toys. If swallowed by ferrets, surgical step is expensive. Always watch over your ferrets.
3. Schedule ferrets for exams and vaccinations – All ferrets come with papers from breeders. Check dates. Make sure you follow the schedule for vaccination. First shot is given for 6 to 7 weeks, second shot on the 10th to 11th week and 13th to 14th week on the third shot. During vaccination, veterinarians must check for any signs of ear mites, fleas, or congenital defects. Ferret can have diarrhea brought about by bacteria. Most often, feces are greenish in color. It is best to isolate the ferret suffering from diarrhea. Nursing them well with antibiotics is required.
4. Best way to cuddle them is when they are at least 30 days old. During these times, they cannot see us well but our touch and cuddles will tell them that they are loved. Schedule a physical activity daily for 5 to 10 minutes. Kids cuddling them should be under supervision. Baby kits react best when they are touched or tickled while older ones just need attention. Slowly speak to a sleeping ferret. Support your pet as you would a human baby. When they wake up, they become very active. Let them play with toys and in surroundings outside of their cage so they feel more loved.
The ferret’s normal “chook-chook sound” will tell you and its caretakers that everything is good and will make you feel okay knowing that your beloved ferret is in a healthy condition.
